Puerto Rico is an amazing destination for couples looking to experience the charms of a Caribbean country without *technically* having to leave the United States. Because Puerto Rico is a United States territory, you can visit from the U.S. without a passport. Once on the island, you can explore all of the amazing things to do in Puerto Rico with minimal traveling. Because Puerto Rico is small, you can easily explore it all. While roaming the country, you’ll see beautiful beaches, historic forts, misty jungles, raging waterfalls and more. Keep reading for all of our favorite things to do in Puerto Rico for couples. Try some (or all) of these things to do in Puerto Rico to create your own romantic Puerto Rican vacation.

San Juan

Visit Old San Juan

Old San Juan is possibly the most romantic Caribbean city. We loved it. The town streets are paved in cobblestone, the houses are painted bright colors, flowers and vines grow everywhere. Just wandering the streets is romantic!

However, if you’re looking for more things to do as a couple, there are so many bars and restaurants that you can get lost in for hours – like Empanadas and Beer, one of our favorites.

Take A Food Tour

There are food tours throughout Puerto Rico and nothing says love quite like stuffing your faces and gorging on delicious food together… or is that just our love language? Puerto Rican food is greasy, filled with unique vegetables, and very filling. We like to think of it as the comfort food of the Caribbean. So sign up for a walking food tour in San Juan or take a drive along the Pork Highway. However, you choose to explore the culinary delights, we think a food tour is one of our favorite things to do in Puerto Rico.

Check out all of our favorite Puerto Rico tours here, including an amazing food tour of San Juan.

Kayak In A Bioluminescent Bay

Bioluminescent bays are rare in this world. Yet somehow Puerto Rico got blessed with 3!! So don’t miss out on night kayaking in one of these bays. It is a perfect activity for couples as you get to do a team building kayak ride in darkness – something that may test your relationship. However, when you get to the bioluminescent bay, the water will glow. As you splash, paddle and float through the water anywhere the water is moved, blue light will momentarily shine. It’s hard to capture in photographs so you’ll have to see it for yourself.

La Coca Falls

Explore El Yunque

El Yunque makes a great day trip for couples. Rent a car and head into the mountains for the perfect trip to a tropical rainforest. While in El Yunque, you can explore the waterfalls, scenic views of the mountains and more!

If you’re willing to do a bit of hiking, you can easily find hidden pools at the bases of waterfalls where you can swim. It’s super romantic and ideal for a Caribbean couples vacation.

Casa Bacardi

Take A Rum Tour

Puerto Rico is seeped in rum history. With two major rum distilleries on the island and the birth place of the pina colada, it’s no wonder that run is king here.

If you’re in Old San Juan, consider taking a short trip to across the bay to the Bacardí factory. They offer daily tours of the factory, rum tastings and cocktail making classes. We did the cocktail making class and had a ton of fun. Advanced reservations are recommended.

If you’re in Ponce, you can tour the Don Q mansion and rum tasting facility. They offer daily tours of the mansion, rum tastings and cocktail making classes. We took a cocktail making class and it was very informative and fun. Advanced reservations are recommended.

Eat From A Street Vendor

Want to have a romantic adventure that doesn’t involve sweating? Check out the street vendors in Puerto Rico for some adventurous tasty treats. There are lots of cities in Puerto Rico that have gathering areas for food vendors that make it easy for us tourists to try lots of street vendors all in one easy stop. Check out Santurce or Luquillo for these vendor gatherings.

Visit A Coffee Farm

Take a trip to the southern section of Puerto Rico to visit some coffee haciendas. If your travel partner loves coffee almost as much as they love you, what says “romantic getaway” quite like a trip to a coffee farm. You’ll learn about growing coffee and also get to try some for yourself.

Luquillo Beach

Spend Time On A White Sand Beach

Spend time exploring the beaches of Puerto Rico. There are some beautiful white sand beaches that grace the shores of Puerto Rico. Make sure to spend at least a day soaking up the sun and exploring the nearby beach vendors at a minimum of one beach.

Snorkel on Culebra

Visit the small island of Culebra to see Flamenco Beach, one of the best beaches in the world, and try to see a sea turtle while snorkeling. The white sand beach is in a sheltered cove and a a popular place for couples looking to escape the busier beaches of mainland Puerto Rico.

Make Chocolate

Chocolate is also grown in Puerto Rico and a super romantic date is an afternoon spent harvesting chocolate. There are a few chocolate farms that offer tours, like this one. Some explain the growing and harvesting process, while our favorite tours focus on the making and tasting of chocolate!

Visit A Lighthouse

As an island nation, it shouldn’t be a surprise that lighthouses dot the shoreline. You can visit several and take tours of a few. They are generally located on beautiful tall cliffs next to a rocky shoreline. The views from the lighthouses are stunning and romantic. The Punta Tuna and Punta Higüera lighthouses are popular stops. And the Cabo Rojo lighthouse is a great stop if you are looking for a place to watch the sun set.
